Mold design and optimization for thermoforming machines
Design of multi-cavity forming molds for thermoforming machines, optimized for cycle time.
PROBLEM
In thermoforming, wall thickness distribution depends directly on mold surface temperature, vacuum channel layout and pre-stretch geometry. Uneven cooling and poor venting lengthen the cycle and cause thinning, warpage and forming defects.
APPROACH
I relocated cavities, vacuum holes and cooling channels according to part geometry and material behavior, balanced wall thickness with plug-assist geometry, and made the mold components modular for machining and easy maintenance.
RESULT
More uniform wall thickness, a shorter cycle and a modular mold structure suited to quick changeovers.
MY ROLE
Mold design, manufacturing drawings, trial runs and improvement
