Computer-aided analysis of the effect of lug profile on fatigue life in wide-base agricultural rims

Finite element study of how lug profile geometry affects the fatigue life of wide-base agricultural rims.

University project

PROBLEM

Agricultural rims carry variable-amplitude, multiaxial loads in field conditions. Geometric discontinuities in the lug region that joins the rim disc to the hub cause stress concentrations and early fatigue damage.

APPROACH

I built parametric models of several lug profiles, analyzed rotating bending and radial load cases with the finite element method to find stress amplitudes at critical locations, and estimated fatigue life using the S-N approach with mean stress corrections.

RESULT

The effect of lug profile parameters on stress concentration and fatigue life was compared, and geometry changes that improve durability were proposed.

MY ROLE

Parametric modeling, finite element analysis, fatigue assessment, reporting
