Control arm design and mechanical analysis for motor vehicles

Design and strength analysis of a suspension control arm for motor vehicles.

University project

PROBLEM

A control arm transfers vertical, longitudinal and lateral wheel forces into the chassis while holding suspension geometry. It must be light yet stiff enough under critical cases such as braking, cornering and pothole impact.

APPROACH

I set the attachment points from suspension kinematics and designed the arm around them. I defined the critical driving load cases, ran static analysis and refined the cross-sections based on stress and displacement results to balance mass and stiffness.

RESULT

A lightweight, manufacturable control arm geometry that is safe under the defined load cases.

MY ROLE

Design, load analysis, finite element analysis, reporting
