Solar-powered lighting system
Design and sizing of an off-grid, solar-powered lighting system.
PROBLEM
Off-grid lighting must run through the night under varying solar conditions. If panel power, battery capacity and pole structure are not sized together, the system either falls short or carries needless cost.
APPROACH
I built an energy balance from local irradiation data and lighting demand to size panel power, battery capacity and charge control. I optimized panel tilt for yield and checked the pole and fasteners mechanically under wind load.
RESULT
A lighting system sized for uninterrupted operation, mechanically safe and low in maintenance.
MY ROLE
Energy calculation, system sizing, mechanical design
